Convert WRZ to another file type
To convert WRZ VRML worlds to another format, you need Cortona3D Viewer or other 3D software.
Convert a file to WRZ
To convert other file formats to the "Compressed 3D Scene File" file type, you need software like Cortona3D Viewer or a similar tool.
About WRZ files
A .WRZ file is a compressed VRML (Virtual Reality Modeling Language) 3D scene. Developed in the 1990s, it stores 3D vertices, edges, surface colors, and textures meant for interactive web graphics. To save bandwidth over slow dial-up connections, these files are heavily compressed using the standard GZIP algorithm.
Historically, you needed dedicated browser plugins like Cortona3D Viewer to render the 3D environments. Today, modern 3D suites like Blender can still import the underlying uncompressed data if legacy add-ons are enabled.
Users frequently need to convert .WRZ files because VRML is a completely obsolete standard. Modern web browsers dropped native plugin support over a decade ago, making the files unreadable in standard web environments. Furthermore, because the files are GZIP compressed, many modern 3D viewers will simply fail to open them outright.
The best conversion targets are GLTF or GLB for modern web-based 3D viewing, or OBJ and STL if you intend to edit the mesh or 3D print the object. Be aware that during conversion, you will likely lose any legacy interactive scripts, animations, or hyperlinking embedded in the original VRML code.
Because this file format combines an outdated 3D standard with compression, it is exceptionally difficult to open without specialized tools. Often only the original legacy software can properly read or export the data. However, just drag and drop your file to identify the format, view it, and convert it when possible on convert.guru. If our analysis detects the underlying supported GZIP stream, viewing or extracting the standard text-based WRL content may still be possible.
Convert.Guru analyzes your WRZ file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
FAQ
If you want to convert WRZ file to OBJ, FBX, DAE, 3DS, MAX, BLEND, MA, MB, C4D, STL, PLY or WRL, you can use Cortona3D Viewer or similar software from the "Compressed 3D Web Graphics" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….

The WRZ Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our WRZ converter.
