Convert WOS to another file type
To convert your WOS file to another format, you need Web of Science or other Data software.
Convert a file to WOS
To convert other file formats to the "Bibliometric Search Query" file type, you need software like Web of Science or a similar tool.
About WOS files
A .WOS file is a saved search history exported from the Web of Science platform, a global citation database used widely in academic research. These files contain the specific search syntax, Boolean operators, time spans, and database editions selected during a session. While technically structured as XML, the file is designed to be re-imported into the Web of Science interface to rerun complex queries for systematic reviews or bibliometric analysis.
The biggest obstacle for users is that .WOS files are not human-readable reports; they are raw data containers. Researchers often need to convert these files because they cannot open them without an active, institutional subscription to Web of Science. Furthermore, the XML structure makes it difficult to simply copy-paste the search strategy into a manuscript or protocol document. To document your search methodology for publication (e.g., for PRISMA guidelines) or to migrate the query to another database like PubMed or Scopus, you should convert the .WOS file to TXT (for raw text extraction), PDF (for archiving the strategy visually), or CSV (to organize query lines).
Convert.Guru analyzes your WOS file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert WOS file to CSV, JSON, XML, YAML, YML, TOML, INI, CFG, CONF, DAT, DB or SQL, you can use Web of Science or similar software from the "Search History Export" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert DBF, XML, SQLITE, XLSX, SQL, TSV, ACCDB, YAML, MDB, CSV, ODS or JSON files to WOS, try Web of Science or another comparable tool in the "Search History Export" category.
The WOS Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our WOS converter.
