The .workflow file extension primarily represents an orchestration automation package used by VMware vRealize Orchestrator, a metadata definition for Salesforce, or a task automation script created by Apple Automator. These files store procedural logic, conditional triggers, and sequential tasks designed to automate complex IT or business operations.
The core disadvantage of the .workflow format is extreme ecosystem fragmentation. Multiple companies use this exact extension for completely different, proprietary architectures. A VMware .workflow is actually a renamed ZIP archive containing Java-based orchestration payloads. A Salesforce .workflow is a strict XML document dictating CRM business logic. An Apple Automator .workflow is technically a macOS package directory, not a single file. This lack of standardization means cross-platform compatibility is non-existent, and users constantly struggle with "unsupported format" errors when opening files outside their native environments.
Because of this proprietary lock-in, standard online converters fail to process .workflow files. You cannot magically convert a VMware network orchestration into an Apple Automator script. The best workaround is data extraction. VMware files should be targeted for ZIP conversion to extract internal scripts, while Salesforce files can be safely read as XML or TXT.
