About WORKBOOK files
A .workbook file primarily functions as a Legacy Shared Workbook User Data file in Microsoft Excel. It tracks user presence, metadata, and lock information when multiple users access a shared spreadsheet over a network. Alternatively, it may be a Xamarin Workbook file, which is an interactive C# coding and documentation environment previously developed by Microsoft. Neither of these files are meant for traditional document sharing. The Excel variant is purely an internal utility file and lacks the actual spreadsheet data, which is safely stored in the parent XLSX file. The Xamarin variant relies on a highly specific local developer environment to render its interactive elements. Standard online converters consistently fail to process .workbook files because they are either dependent on active network configurations or contain proprietary JSON-based C# code rather than standard document data. Converting an Excel .workbook is generally impossible and unnecessary, but Xamarin workbooks can often be extracted to plain text (TXT) or Markdown (MD) to salvage code snippets. Because this is a closed, proprietary, and specialized format, reading it outside its native software is difficult.
