About WORKBOOK files

The .workbook file extension primarily identifies a Shared Workbook User Data file generated by Microsoft Excel. These files function as auxiliary data containers used during legacy shared editing sessions to track user-specific views, metadata, or conflict resolution data. They are not standalone spreadsheets and often lack the full dataset found in standard XLSX or XLS files. A common frustration is attempting to open a .workbook file directly, only to find it unrecognized or corrupted because the parent spreadsheet is missing. A secondary, distinct format using this extension is the Xamarin Workbook, a deprecated interactive document format used by .NET developers. These are essentially Markdown files combined with executable C# code blocks, similar to Jupyter notebooks. Because the software is discontinued, users are often locked out of this content. For Excel-associated files, conversion is generally not possible without the parent file; however, you can attempt to import the raw data into Excel or a text editor to salvage information.
