About WIZ files
The .WIZ file extension represents a Microsoft Word Wizard, a legacy file format used in older versions of Office (97–2003) to automate document creation. These files function as interactive templates, using Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) macros to walk users through a step-by-step questionnaire - generating complex documents like legal pleadings, newsletters, or resumes based on the answers. Technically, they are Microsoft Compound binary files (OLE2), sharing the same architecture as pre-2007 DOC files but with executable logic embedded.
While useful in the 90s, .WIZ files create significant friction today. Modern security policies in Microsoft Word (part of Office 365) heavily restrict or block these files because the embedded macros are a common vector for malware. Opening them often triggers frustrating "Macro Security" alerts or errors stating the file type is blocked by Trust Center settings. Furthermore, because the "wizard" logic is proprietary and code-based, these files are completely unreadable in web browsers, Google Docs, or standard mobile viewers. To access the content without risking macro execution or wrestling with compatibility modes, it is highly recommended to convert them. Target DOCX to edit the resulting text in modern software, or PDF if you need a static archive of the document structure.
Convert.Guru analyzes your WIZ file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

The WIZ Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our WIZ converter.
