A .wis file is primarily associated with the Wellsite Information Specification (WITS), a legacy data format used in the oil and gas industry to record real-time drilling and formation parameters. These files contain critical telemetry data - such as depth, rate of penetration, and gamma-ray readings - streamed from drilling rigs.
Users often struggle with .wis files because they rely on an outdated, pre-internet standard (dating back to the 1980s) that exists in two forms: Level 0 (ASCII text) and Level 1 (binary packed).
