A .WIS file is a well log data file primarily used in the petroleum and oil industry. These files store critical drilling metrics, geological sensor data, and wellsite telemetry formatted according to the WITS (Wellsite Information Transfer Specification) standard developed by Energistics. They are designed for machine-to-machine data transfer at active drilling rigs.
Opening and interpreting .WIS files natively requires specialized and expensive industry software, such as Techlog or specific WITS data parsers. The main disadvantage of the .WIS format is its highly proprietary and niche nature. It requires costly licensing fees to access natively, and the data is locked in an industrial format that is completely unsupported by web browsers or standard office applications.
