About WIL files

The .WIL file format primarily serves two very different functions: it is either a proprietary game data archive (known as a WEMADE Image Library) or a measurement data log generated by Wilmers Messtechnik equipment. In the gaming context, developers like Wemade Entertainment use .WIL files to pack thousands of 2D sprites, textures, and UI elements into a single container for games like the Legend of Mir series. In the industrial context, .WIL files store raw telemetry and measurement data logged by specific Wilmers hardware.

These formats share a major disadvantage: they are highly proprietary and strictly bound to their original ecosystems. The files cannot be opened by standard operating systems or web browsers. Game archives require custom community unpackers to extract the assets. Measurement logs require specialized data analysis software, making it incredibly frustrating to share critical data with colleagues who rely on standard tools like Microsoft Excel. Additionally, older systems used .WIL files as legacy WordPerfect printer drivers.

Because the .WIL format is typically a closed binary container, standard online converters fail to process it. Standard image editors cannot see the sprites inside, and standard text editors will only display scrambled code. You usually need the original software to export the data into standard targets like PNG (for game sprites) or CSV (for measurement logs).

However, you can still investigate the file easily. Just drag and drop your file to identify the exact format version, view its internal metadata, and convert it when possible on convert.guru. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format, viewing or extraction may still be possible.

Convert.Guru analyzes your WIL file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

The WIL Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our WIL converter.
