About WIC files

A .WIC file primarily functions as an Embedded Linux Disk Image generated by The Yocto Project. It is a fully partitioned, bootable operating system built to be flashed directly onto SD cards or flash memory for embedded devices. Alternatively, a tiny fraction of .WIC files are Java Wavelet Images - a highly obscure raster graphics format created by Sasha Chukov's JWICTranslator.

To deploy Yocto disk images, developers rely on the command-line wic utility or flashing software like balenaEtcher. The older graphical format can only be viewed using niche image viewers like XnViewMP.

The .WIC disk image format is large, rigid, and completely unreadable by native Windows or macOS environments. Its raw block data and Linux-specific filesystems (such as ext4) mean you cannot just double-click to view the files inside. If you have the image variant, it is practically a dead format, entirely unsupported by modern web browsers, making it frustratingly obscure.

You should extract the .WIC disk image to a ZIP or .TAR.GZ file to access its internal directories, or convert it into a standard IMG or ISO file for compatibility with virtualization tools. For the Java Wavelet variant, instantly convert it to JPG or PNG to avoid losing access to the visual data. Be aware that extracting a disk image destroys its bootable partition structure.

These files are exceptionally difficult to process. Disk images contain rigid partition tables that standard archive tools fail to parse, while the Java Wavelet codec is proprietary and obsolete. Typically, only the original OpenEmbedded build environment can safely modify the disk partitions. However, convert.guru can identify the file format, inspect the file, and show text or internal content. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format, viewing or conversion may still be possible. Just drag and drop your file to identify the format, view it, and convert it when possible.

Users also converted GZ, DSK, ISO, VCD, IMG, VMDK and QCOW2 files.

FAQ

If you want to convert WIC file to ISO, IMG, VMDK, QCOW2, JPG, PDF, PNG, GIF, BMP, TIFF or TIF, you can use The Yocto Project or similar software from the "Embedded Linux Disk Image" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….

To convert RAW, PNG, AI, NEF, PSB, DNG, SVG, GIF, EPS, JPG, ARW or PDF files to WIC, try The Yocto Project or another comparable tool in the "Embedded Linux Disk Image" category.

The WIC Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our WIC converter.
