About VUD files

A .VUD file is a Virtual Machine Undo Drive used to store temporary system modifications. It is native to legacy virtualization environments like Microsoft Virtual PC and Microsoft Virtual Server.

This format presents severe limitations for modern users. It is a proprietary 'delta' or differencing disk that only holds the binary changes made during a single virtual machine session. Because it does not contain a complete file system, a .VUD file is fundamentally useless without its exact parent VHD (Virtual Hard Disk) file. The format is completely obsolete, unsupported by modern web browsers, and abandoned in favor of newer formats like AVHDX in modern hypervisors such as Hyper-V.

The ideal conversion target for a .VUD file is a complete VHD or VHDX file. This is typically achieved by 'committing' or merging the undo disk into the parent disk using the original software.

This file format is notoriously difficult to open or convert online. Because it is a closed, proprietary format that relies entirely on an external data source (the parent drive), standard online converters fail to process it. Often, only the original Microsoft Virtual PC software can properly read, merge, or export the data. Even if full data extraction fails due to missing parent disks, our analysis detects the file signature and underlying metadata, confirming exactly what you are dealing with.

Convert.Guru analyzes your VUD file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted DICT, VSV and VFD files.

The VUD Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our VUD converter.
