About VSV files
A .vsv file is a Virtual Machine Saved State file utilized by Microsoft Hyper-V and older virtualization platforms like Windows Virtual PC. It functions as a hibernation file for a virtual machine, capturing the exact state of the system's RAM, CPU registers, and virtual device configurations when the machine is suspended or paused. The primary software used to generate and manage these files is Microsoft Hyper-V Manager. A major disadvantage of the .vsv format is its heavily proprietary nature and strict binding to the specific host hardware and Hyper-V version. These files are typically massive, often exceeding several gigabytes depending on the allocated virtual RAM. Because it is a raw memory dump rather than a structured file system, you cannot directly extract standard files, documents, or media from it. Standard online converters completely fail to process .vsv files into readable formats like PDF or TXT. The only reliable method to access the enclosed data is to resume the virtual machine in Hyper-V and export your files from within the active guest operating system. This file format is exceptionally difficult to open or convert externally because only the original virtualization software can interpret the binary memory layout. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format, viewing or extraction may still be possible.
Convert.Guru analyzes your VSV file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert VSV file to SYS, DLL, EXE, DRV, VXD, 386, COM, BAT, CMD, SCR, PIF or LNK, you can use Microsoft Hyper-V or similar software from the "Virtual Machine State Storage" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert MSI, EXE, REG, MST, LNK, CAB, CAT, DRV, INF, SYS, MSU or DLL files to VSV, try Microsoft Hyper-V or another comparable tool in the "Virtual Machine State Storage" category.
The VSV Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our VSV converter.
