About VTEX_C files
The .vtex_c file format is a Valve Source 2 Compiled Texture. Game developers and modders use this format to store optimized texture data for games running on the Source 2 engine, such as Counter-Strike 2, Dota 2, and Half-Life: Alyx. You can view these files using VRF (Source 2 Resource Viewer) or Valve's official modding tools.
Users often need to convert .vtex_c files because they are proprietary and closed. Standard image editors like Adobe Photoshop or web browsers cannot open them natively. The compiled nature means the file contains engine-specific metadata, hardware compression logic, and mipmaps that lock the image inside the game ecosystem. To edit the texture or use it in another 3D engine, you must extract it to a standard format.
The best target formats are PNG for lossless 2D editing, TGA for retaining complex alpha channels in game development pipelines, or DDS for direct texture manipulation. Be aware that extracting the texture will discard the engine-specific compilation data.
This format is notoriously difficult to process because it is a closed, compiled asset. Often, only the original Source 2 software or specialized community extraction tools can properly read the data.

The VTEX_C Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our VTEX_C converter.
