About VSA files

The .VSA file extension primarily identifies a Virtual AlvaForm Avatar file developed by Alvanon Inc. These files store highly accurate 3D human body models used for digital garment fitting in professional apparel design software like CLO 3D, Optitex, and Browzwear. Under the hood, Alvanon .VSA files are formatted as SQL databases containing both 3D mesh geometry and precise biometric measurements. Alternatively, a .VSA file may be a Virtual Software Archive created by VMware ThinApp. In this case, the file acts as a customized ZIP container holding a virtualized application and its dependencies for deployment across different operating systems.

The main disadvantage of the .VSA format is its highly proprietary and closed nature. AlvaForm avatars represent expensive physical fit models and are strictly encrypted or locked via Digital Rights Management (DRM) to prevent unauthorized distribution. Opening a 3D .VSA file outside of an actively licensed 3D apparel design program is essentially impossible. Similarly, VMware's .VSA archives use custom headers tailored to the ThinApp virtualization engine, meaning standard archive extraction tools often fail to read the contents.

If you need to use an Alvanon 3D avatar in general 3D software like Blender, you must import the .VSA into licensed apparel software first, and then export it as an OBJ or FBX file. Direct file-to-file conversion using online tools is blocked by the proprietary DRM. Because this file format is heavily restricted, it is difficult to open or convert directly. Often, only the original authoring software can properly read or export the data. However, convert.guru can still identify the file format, inspect the file, and show text or internal content. Just drag and drop your file to see what it is and convert it if supported. If our analysis detects an unencrypted underlying SQL or ZIP structure, viewing the raw text or extracting basic components may still be possible.

Convert.Guru analyzes your VSA file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted PDF, WAD, UDB and SQLITE files.

The VSA Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our VSA converter.
