About VNCLOC files
.VNCLOC files are connection shortcuts created by the native Apple Screen Sharing application on macOS. They store remote server addresses, ports, and specific connection parameters for Virtual Network Computing (VNC) sessions. Users double-click these files on a Mac to instantly initiate a remote desktop connection to another computer on the network or over the internet.
The main disadvantage of the .VNCLOC format is its proprietary ecosystem lock-in. It is structurally formatted as a macOS Property List (plist) file. If you send this file to a Windows or Linux user, standard third-party VNC clients like RealVNC or TightVNC will not recognize it. The file cannot be natively opened outside of macOS without manual inspection.
Users often need to convert or inspect this file to extract the raw server IP address or connection string (typically formatted as vnc://username@host:port). Converting the file to TXT or XML makes the underlying text readable on any operating system. If you want to use the connection on a PC, you must manually rebuild the data into a standard VNC configuration file.
This file format is difficult to convert directly into other functional connection shortcuts because macOS tightly integrates the connection process with its internal Keychain for password management.
Convert.Guru analyzes your VNCLOC file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

The VNCLOC Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our VNCLOC converter.
