About VIM files

The .VIM extension serves two distinct, incompatible ecosystems: developer tools and medical imaging. Most commonly, these are configuration or script files for the Vim text editor (and its predecessor Vi). These plain text files store settings, syntax highlighting rules, and plugins that automate editing tasks. While powerful for developers, they are useless to standard users and require the specific interpreter to function.

However, in healthcare environments, a .VIM file may be a proprietary VidiGo medical image generated by ifa systems AG. Unlike text scripts, these are binary volumetric image files used in ophthalmology and diagnostic imaging. The primary issue here is the specialized lock-in; typical image viewers like Microsoft Photos or Apple Preview cannot render them. To share these medical scans with patients or general practitioners, you must convert them to standard raster formats like JPG or PNG. For archiving Vim scripts without losing formatting, converting to PDF or standard TXT is the pragmatic workflow.

Convert.Guru analyzes your VIM file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted SWP, LUA and IDE files.

The VIM Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our VIM converter.
