Convert a file to VID
To convert other file formats to the "Generic Video or Project File" file type, you need software like VLC media player or a similar tool.
About VID files
The .VID file extension is highly ambiguous. In most cases, it is simply a generic video container based on the ISO/IEC MPEG-4 standard. However, it is also widely used as a video project file for the Rockstar Editor in Grand Theft Auto V, or as legacy cutscene files in older PC games like Fallout 2 and Earth 2150. Specialized legal software, such as Stenograph VideoNote, also uses it for synchronized deposition videos.
The main disadvantage of the .VID format is its lack of standardized support. Because any developer can use the extension for proprietary data, mainstream applications like web browsers, Adobe Premiere Pro, and standard operating system players will typically fail to open it. Furthermore, if the file is a Rockstar Editor project, it does not actually contain video data - it only stores metadata, camera angles, and rendering instructions for the game engine. Trying to play a project file will always fail.
To make these files usable, you must standardize them. For web playback and mobile compatibility, convert your generic video files to MP4. For high-quality archiving, convert to MKV. Drag and drop your file here to analyze and convert it securely right in your browser. Note: If your file is a game project file, you must export the video directly from within the game engine.
