About VID files
The .VID file extension identifies two distinct file types that require different conversion approaches. Most commonly (63%), it is a Generic Video File, often a standard MP4 or AVI container that has been renamed or saved with a generic extension by older camcorders, security systems, or Android devices. These files are typically valid video streams but fail to open because the operating system does not recognize the extension. Users often encounter playback errors like "Format not supported" despite the underlying data being standard.
The second most common use (20%) is a Rockstar Editor Clip created by Grand Theft Auto V. These are not playable video files; they are small data files (often ~4KB) containing game engine replay instructions (camera angles, character positions, weather). A common catch is users trying to convert these .vid clips directly to MP4 using external software, which fails because the file contains no pixel data. To convert these, you must load the clip inside the Rockstar Editor within the game and use the "Export" function to render a playable video.
For generic video files, the best conversion target is MP4 (H.264/AAC) for universal compatibility with web browsers, mobile devices, and smart TVs. For high-quality archiving, MKV is recommended. Legacy game files (e.g., Bethesda, Fallout 2) use proprietary compression that may require specialized game-specific extractors.

The VID Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our VID converter.
