About VDP files
.VDP files have multiple completely distinct uses, making them confusing for end-users. The most common variation is a Smoke detector diagnostic pack used by Xtralis VESDA early-warning fire systems. These are essentially renamed ZIP archives that store critical diagnostic logs, device configuration data, and fault reports. Another major variation is a video device driver pack utilized by Milestone XProtect VMS to add network support for new IP cameras. Less frequently, the extension acts as an encrypted data file for VirtualDub or a Visual Studio Deployment Project by Microsoft. The primary disadvantage of the .VDP format is its highly specialized, proprietary nature. Users often receive these files from field technicians or security systems but lack the expensive enterprise software required to open them natively. Driver packs and encrypted video files are locked to their parent software and offer zero interoperability with standard operating systems or web browsers. Conversion options are strictly limited by the specific type of .VDP file you possess. For VESDA diagnostic packs, the best approach is extracting the internal files to view the raw TXT, CSV, or XML data. Attempting to convert Milestone driver packs or VirtualDub encrypted files will usually fail, as they are not standard documents or media files. Because of these conflicting formats, standard online converters routinely fail to process .VDP files. This format is difficult to open because it relies on the original software to parse proprietary schemas or decrypt device drivers. Often only the original software can properly read or export the data. Just drag and drop your file to identify the format, view it, and convert it when possible. Our platform can still identify the file format, inspect the file, and show text or internal content. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format, like a standard ZIP archive, viewing or extraction may still be possible.
Convert.Guru analyzes your VDP file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

The VDP Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our VDP converter.
