The .VD5 file is a KNX product database file used in commercial and domestic building automation. Manufacturers distribute these files to provide device parameters, application programs, and communication object definitions for their smart building hardware. These files are designed to be imported directly into ETS5 (Engineering Tool Software), which is developed and maintained by the KNX Association.
The primary disadvantage of the .VD5 format is that it is strictly proprietary and locked to the ETS ecosystem. Opening or editing a .VD5 file natively requires an expensive, professional software license. Technicians cannot open these files in standard web browsers or text editors to simply check a hardware parameter on-site, causing major workflow bottlenecks. Standard online converters fail to process them because the data is encoded using ETS-specific compression and database structures.
When conversion is necessary, users typically want to migrate these files to the newer .KNXPROD format for compatibility with modern ETS6 systems, or extract the raw data into XML or ZIP formats.
