About VD5 files
A .VD5 file is a vendor product database used specifically by ETS5 (Engineering Tool Software), the standard software for configuring KNX building automation systems. These files contain the necessary parametric data, firmware information, and communication objects for specific smart devices (like light switches, sensors, or actuators). A key limitation of .VD5 files is their rigid version dependency; they are legacy containers designed strictly for the ETS5 environment. Unlike the modern .KNXPROD format, which bundles data more universally, a .VD5 file often requires an installed, licensed copy of ETS5 just to view the contents or verify compatibility. Users frequently struggle with these files when migrating legacy projects to newer systems (like ETS6) or when trying to extract device parameters for documentation without running heavy engineering software. To access the data without a full ETS setup, converting to PDF (for manual parameter review) or extracting to XML (for data integration) is the pragmatic workaround. For upgrading, these files should be imported and re-exported as .KNXPROD.
