Primarily, the .VBM file is a Veeam Backup Metadata file used by Veeam Backup & Replication. It stores critical information about a backup job, including file structures, deduplication data, and restore points. Secondly, it can be a Video Boy Movie file used by the VisualBoyAdvance emulator to record Game Boy gameplay inputs.
The major disadvantage of the .VBM format is its highly proprietary nature. Veeam metadata files are closely tied to their specific backup chain, meaning they are utterly useless without their accompanying VBK or VIB files. They cannot be opened by standard text editors or generic backup tools. For emulator users, .VBM files do not store actual video data; they only store a sequence of controller inputs. This means you cannot play them in standard media players like VLC or upload them to YouTube directly.
Converting a Veeam .VBM file is generally impossible as it is system-dependent metadata. However, you can export backup reports to PDF or XML from within the Veeam software. For VisualBoyAdvance recordings, the emulator itself must play the input file and render it to a standard video format like AVI or MP4.
