About VBM files

The .VBM extension serves two distinct, incompatible communities, creating significant confusion. primarily, it is a Veeam Backup Metadata file used by Veeam Backup & Replication. These files are small XML-based descriptors that map out the structure of a backup chain (linking VBK full backups and VIB increments). The friction here is high: a .VBM file contains no actual backup data. It is merely a proprietary index. You cannot recover files from it alone, and it requires a licensed Veeam installation to interpret. Admins often struggle when trying to audit these files without the full software suite or when dealing with corrupted metadata that breaks the restore chain.

Secondly, in the emulation community, .VBM stands for VisualBoy Movie. Users often mistake these for standard video files, only to find they fail to open in VLC Media Player or Windows Media Player. This is because the file contains recorded controller inputs (button presses), not audio/video data.
