About VAT files

The .VAT file extension primarily represents a Belgian VAT declaration file. Businesses and accountants use these files to submit their value-added tax returns electronically through the Belgium Intervat government portal. In a minority of cases, a .VAT file functions as a Voltage Security Protocol Token, which is an XML authentication file utilized by Voltage SecureFile for encrypted enterprise data access. Users face significant disadvantages with .VAT files. The format is tightly restricted to specific government or enterprise ecosystems. You cannot open a .VAT file natively in web browsers, and reading the raw data requires navigating complex XML structures or having active login credentials for the Intervat portal. For Voltage tokens, the file is entirely useless without an active enterprise license and the correct decryption environment. The best conversion targets for a .VAT file are XML and ZIP for raw data extraction, or PDF for creating a printable, permanent record of a tax return. Converting to PDF loses the digital signature required for official portal submission, but provides a readable backup for human review and audits. This file format is exceptionally difficult for standard online converters to process because it relies on a closed, domain-specific schema. Often, only the original government portal or enterprise security software can properly read or export the data. Standard document converters fail because they do not understand the underlying tax schema. Because our analysis detects the supported underlying ZIP or XML formats embedded inside the .VAT file, viewing or conversion may still be possible.

Convert.Guru analyzes your VAT file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted GDOC, HWP and ODT files.
