About UVW files

A .UVW file is a proprietary data format generated by the "Unwrap UVW" modifier in Autodesk 3ds Max. It stores the specific coordinate layout (U, V, and W axes) used to map 2D textures onto a 3D polygonal surface. While essential for saving mapping progress, .UVW files present significant friction for cross-platform workflows. They are not image files; you cannot open them in Adobe Photoshop or view them in a web browser. They contain mathematical coordinate data, not pixels, and are strictly locked to the Autodesk ecosystem. Furthermore, a .UVW file is useless in isolation - it requires the original 3D mesh geometry to function. To use this data for texturing, the best path is converting the UV layout into a raster format like PNG or JPG (often referred to as a "UV Template"). For archiving or transferring 3D assets to software like Blender or Maya, rely on universal formats like FBX or OBJ, which embed the UV coordinates directly, rendering the standalone .UVW file obsolete.

Convert.Guru analyzes your UVW file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

FAQ

If you want to convert UVW file to TMP, TEMP, CACHE, LOG, BAK, OLD, NEW, PART, DOWNLOAD, CRDOWNLOAD, LOCK or PID, you can use Autodesk 3ds Max or similar software from the "3D Texture Mapping Data" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….

To convert DEVICE, CACHE, SOCK, SYMLINK, PID, MOUNT, FIFO, LOG, PIPE, TMP, JUNCTION or TEMP files to UVW, try Autodesk 3ds Max or another comparable tool in the "3D Texture Mapping Data" category.

The UVW Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our UVW converter.
