About UT2 files

The .UT2 file extension serves as the container for game maps in the classic arena shooters Unreal Tournament 2003 and Unreal Tournament 2004. These binary files store level geometry, lighting data, spawn points, and references to external textures and sounds necessary to render a playable environment. A significant problem for modern users is the strict engine versioning; a map saved for UT2004 is often incompatible with UT2003, and neither can be opened by standard 3D modeling software like Blender or Autodesk 3ds Max directly. Furthermore, because the format is a compiled binary, users cannot simply edit the text to modify map properties. For gamers looking to play custom levels, no conversion is needed - files simply need to be placed in the /Maps/ directory. However, for modders and archivists, the goal is often extraction. To access the internal assets, you must convert the .UT2 data into editable formats. Using tools like UnrealEd or UE Viewer (umodel), you can export the level geometry to OBJ or PSK, textures to TGA or BMP, and audio to WAV. In rare cases (approx. 39% of files), a .UT2 file may be a Kingsoft game data archive, which is a completely unrelated compressed package requiring specific unpacking tools from Kingsoft's legacy software suite.

Convert.Guru analyzes your UT2 file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted 2DS, UT4MOD and UT2MOD files.

The UT2 Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our UT2 converter.
