About USAGE files
The .usage file extension is primarily used to store usage statistics, system resource logs, and application health data. These files are generated by various software systems, including Microsoft SharePoint, Adobe Creative Cloud, the Microsoft Windows System Resource Usage Monitor (SRUM), and the Plan 9 build tool. Depending on the generating application, a .usage file might contain raw UTF-8 text, structured JSON data, or compressed binary data tracking metrics like server load, error rates, or build process times.
The main disadvantage of .usage files is their lack of standardization. Because they are automatically generated back-end logs, they are not designed for user interaction. Opening them often requires knowing exactly which system created them. Large SharePoint usage logs can easily exceed hundreds of megabytes, crashing standard text editors. Furthermore, proprietary compressed .usage files generated by Windows SRUM cannot be read directly without specialized diagnostic tools.
If the file contains plain text or JSON, the best conversion targets are TXT, JSON, or CSV for easier parsing and data analysis in spreadsheet software like Microsoft Excel. When converting to CSV, complex nested JSON structures might be flattened, potentially losing hierarchical context.
Because many .usage files are proprietary or undocumented binary formats, standard online converters often fail to process them. Even if the file is an obscure log, our tool can often extract the embedded text strings or JSON payloads.
Convert.Guru analyzes your USAGE file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

The USAGE Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our USAGE converter.
