About ULZ files
The .ULZ extension is a classic example of a "container" format that confuses users by hiding simple data behind a proprietary name. In 78% of cases, this file is merely a standard ZIP archive used by the WHDownloader (formerly Windows Updates Downloader) tool. Inside, it contains nothing more than XML lists (update.xml) cataloging Windows and Office patches. Users often need to convert these to XML or TXT to manually inspect update URLs without running the legacy downloader software.
The secondary variation (approx. 21%) is significantly more complex: a proprietary data capture file generated by USBlyzer. These files log real-time USB traffic (Request/Response blocks) for hardware debugging. Unlike the WHDownloader variant, these cannot simply be renamed and unzipped; they require the original software to view or export to CSV, JSON, or HTML for analysis. A small minority of files may be associated with LG Electronics firmware or Ultra Librarian CAD data, often utilizing a Microsoft Compound file structure that requires hex editing or specific vendor tools to access.
Convert.Guru analyzes your ULZ file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert ULZ file to CSV, JSON, XML, YAML, YML, TOML, INI, CFG, CONF, DAT, DB or SQL, you can use WHDownloader or similar software from the "Update List Storage" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert DBF, XML, SQLITE, XLSX, SQL, TSV, ACCDB, YAML, MDB, CSV, ODS or JSON files to ULZ, try WHDownloader or another comparable tool in the "Update List Storage" category.
The ULZ Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our ULZ converter.
