About UFS files

The .UFS file extension is primarily associated with the UVI File System, a monolithic container format used to store high-fidelity virtual instrument soundbanks. These files pack thousands of WAV or FLAC samples, scripts, and UI graphics into a single, encrypted archive designed for the free UVI Workstation or the advanced UVI Falcon sampler. Users often attempt to convert UFS files directly to audio formats like MP3 or WAV, but this is typically impossible due to proprietary encryption and DRM (often requiring an iLok license). The only valid "conversion" workflow is to load the file into UVI Workstation within a DAW (like Logic Pro or Ableton Live) and export the audio output.

A secondary, unrelated use of the extension is for FreeBSD Unix File System images. These are system dumps or disk images formatted with the UFS standard (UFS1 or UFS2). On Windows or macOS, these appear as unreadable binary files. To access their contents, users must either mount the image using virtualization software or convert the disk image to a standard format like ISO or IMG using disk utility tools.

Convert.Guru analyzes your UFS file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted IMG, XSB, RFL, OBW and ZFS files.

The UFS Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our UFS converter.
