About UB files

The .UB extension is a unique source of confusion because it serves two completely different technical functions depending on its origin. Most commonly (54%), it is a U-Boot Image used by the Das U-Boot bootloader to initialize embedded devices (like routers and IoT hardware). These files encapsulate a Linux kernel or filesystem with a strict header that allows the hardware to verify the data before booting. The catch here is that they are binary blobs; you cannot open them in a text editor, and they require command-line tools like mkimage to manipulate.

Alternatively, a .UB file may contain Unsigned Byte audio data (Raw PCM). Unlike a standard WAV or MP3, these files lack a "header" telling the computer how to play them (e.g., sample rate, channel count). If you try to open this in a standard player like VLC, it will likely interpret the unsigned 8-bit data incorrectly, resulting in loud static or silence.

The UB Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our UB converter.
