About RAN files

The .RAN file extension primarily represents an Audio Notetaker Project file created by Sonocent Audio Notetaker. These files are complex workspaces that store recorded audio chunks alongside color-coded highlights, typed text notes, and imported presentation slides. Because it is a highly proprietary project format, a major disadvantage is that .RAN files cannot be natively played or opened by standard media players or text editors. Users must have an active license for Sonocent software to view or edit the workspace. To share the contents, you must manually export the audio to MP3 or WAV, and the text notes to DOCX or PDF from within the software. Standard online converters inevitably fail to process this proprietary audio/text bundle.

Additionally, .RAN files are often generated as Banner System Reports by the Ellucian Banner higher education administrative software. In this context, the file is simply a standard PDF document or report generated via Apache FOP, but saved with the obscure .RAN extension. Users frequently face limits when sharing these files because standard operating systems and web browsers do not recognize the extension and refuse to open them.

Finally, some .RAN files act as property management data archives created by the LandlordMax software. Under the hood, these are standard ZIP archives containing database backups.

Because these formats are either deeply proprietary or disguised standard formats, direct conversion can be tricky. Our analyzer will inspect the internal file signature. If it detects an underlying PDF or ZIP structure, viewing or extraction is often possible without needing the original software.

Convert.Guru analyzes your RAN file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted JFR, TVR and DEMO files.

The RAN Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our RAN converter.
