About XGS files

The .xgs format is an XACT Global Settings file utilized by Microsoft XNA Game Studio and the Cross-Platform Audio Creation Tool (XACT). This file stores high-level configuration data for game audio projects, including category definitions, variables, RPCs (Run Time Parameter Controls), and references to specific sound banks.

Working with .xgs files presents several challenges. It is a deprecated, proprietary format heavily tied to legacy Microsoft Xbox and Windows game development environments. A major point of confusion for users is that .xgs files do not contain any actual playable audio data. Instead, they act as metadata maps that point to XWB (Wave Bank) and XSB (Sound Bank) files. Because of this, standard online audio converters completely fail when trying to process them.

Converting an .xgs to formats like MP3 or WAV is impossible. The original XACT application is typically required to compile or modify these settings. Our tool can inspect the .xgs file and extract the underlying text or XML data. This allows you to recover crucial variable names and file paths, even if you no longer have access to the original 2000s-era game development software.

Convert.Guru analyzes your XGS file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted XWB, XSB, XNB, HDP and SB2 files.
