The .TZB file extension is highly fragmented, serving primarily as a proprietary backup or compressed archive for niche software and hardware. Its most common use is as an Analyzer System Restore file generated by Instrumentation Laboratory (Werfen) for their ACL TOP medical testing systems. Alternatively, it is used as a speech command backup profile in Tazti Speech Recognition, a compiled database file for the IANA Time Zone Database (originally associated with Tzer-Liang Lin), or even an old saved game state for the Sega Taz-Mania video game.
Because these files are hyper-specific, the current format is highly restrictive. You cannot open a .tzb file natively in Windows or macOS. The disadvantage of this format is its strict vendor lock-in; it requires the original proprietary software or medical hardware to read the data correctly. If you do not have an ACL TOP testing machine or an installed copy of Tazti, the file appears as unusable dead weight on your hard drive.
To access the trapped data, you must convert or extract the file into standard formats. For the ACL TOP variant, the best target format is ZIP, as the file relies on standard ZIP compression under the hood. Extracting it allows you to view internal logs, configurations, or raw text data (like TXT or CSV). Note that extracting the data manually may break its ability to be restored back into the original hardware.
