Convert TXZ to another file type
To convert your TXZ file to another format, you need XZ Utils or other Compressed software.
Convert a file to TXZ
To convert other file formats to the "Unix Archive" file type, you need software like XZ Utils or a similar tool.
About TXZ files
A .TXZ file is a unified archive format that combines the grouping capabilities of TAR (Tape Archive) with the high-ratio compression of the XZ format (using the LZMA2 algorithm). Essentially, it is a shorthand extension for .TAR.XZ, created to satisfy legacy systems that limited file extensions to three characters. These files are standard in Linux and Unix environments for distributing software packages (like the Linux Kernel) because they offer significantly smaller file sizes than GZIP or ZIP.
While excellent for saving bandwidth and disk space, .TXZ files introduce friction for Windows and macOS users. They are not natively supported by the default Windows File Explorer, meaning users cannot simply double-click to extract the contents without installing third-party utilities like 7-Zip or WinRAR. Furthermore, because the XZ algorithm prioritizes compression density, creating these archives can be memory-intensive and slower than creating a standard ZIP. For general file sharing across different operating systems, it is highly recommended to convert .TXZ archives to the ubiquitous ZIP format to ensure instant accessibility, or to a standard TAR if you strictly need to preserve Unix file permissions without compression.
Convert.Guru analyzes your TXZ file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert TXZ file to TGZ, ZIP, RAR, 7Z, TAR, GZ, BZ2, XZ, LZMA, CAB, ACE or ARJ, you can use XZ Utils or similar software from the "Compressed Archive Distribution" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert XXE, 7Z, Z, PAK, LHA, DEB, UUE, TAR, LZH, ZIP, PKG or RAR files to TXZ, try XZ Utils or another comparable tool in the "Compressed Archive Distribution" category.
The TXZ Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our TXZ converter.
