About TRE files

The .TRE file extension is heavily fragmented and notoriously difficult to handle. Primarily, it stores phylogenetic tree data using the NEXUS or Newick standard formats. These files mathematically represent evolutionary relationships between biological species. However, .TRE is also widely used as a massive compressed game archive for Star Wars Galaxies by Sony Online Entertainment, a family tree database in Family Tree Maker, or even 3D medical spatial objects in 3D Slicer. Because multiple developers use the same .TRE extension for entirely different purposes, users face a major disadvantage: double-clicking the file usually results in an operating system error because Windows or macOS cannot guess which niche application is required. Game archive .TRE files are often gigabytes in size, strictly proprietary, and cannot be browsed natively. Phylogenetic .TRE files require specialized academic tools like MEGA or an advanced text editor. Standard online converters fail to process .TRE files because they lack the ability to differentiate between a 3D medical model, a proprietary game archive, and a genealogy database. Converting a .TRE depends entirely on its internal structure. Phylogenetic trees should ideally be converted to TXT or visual PDF formats for publication. Genealogy data is best exported to the universal GED (GEDCOM) standard to ensure compatibility across different ancestry platforms. Our analyzer will inspect the internal headers. If the file is a plain text Newick tree, you can read it directly. If it is a proprietary game archive or specialized structural engineering file, viewing or conversion may be limited, as only the original software can properly read or export the data. However, if our analysis detects a supported underlying format, extraction or conversion may still be possible.

Convert.Guru analyzes your TRE file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted NWK, PAI and PAI2 files.

FAQ

If you want to convert TRE file to SHP, KML, KMZ, GPX, GEOJSON, TOPOJSON, TIF, TIFF, ECW, SID, IMG or DEM, you can use MEGA or similar software from the "Phylogenetic & Family Trees" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….

To convert LAZ, KMZ, DTM, CSV, DEM, PRJ, LAS, GPX, DSM, SHP, DBF or KML files to TRE, try MEGA or another comparable tool in the "Phylogenetic & Family Trees" category.

The TRE Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our TRE converter.
