About PAI files

A .pai file is most frequently a Personality Assessment Inventory report generated by software from Psychological Assessment Resources (PAR). These files function as data containers - often structured as Microsoft Compound binary files - that store the raw results, scoring protocols, and interpretation data from psychometric tests.

The Problem: Because they use a proprietary OLE (Object Linking and Embedding) container format, .pai files are not human-readable. You cannot open them with standard text editors like Notepad or word processors like Microsoft Word. They require specific, expensive industry software like PARiConnect or the legacy PAR Portfolio to interpret the binary streams into a readable report. This is a major limitation for clinicians or HR departments trying to archive assessments or share results with patients who do not own the software.

The Solution:

For Archiving & Sharing: Convert to PDF/A. This freezes the assessment layout, ensuring the report looks exactly as intended on any device without requiring PAR software.
For Data Analysis: Convert to CSV or XLSX. This extracts the raw score data, allowing researchers to aggregate multiple patient results in Microsoft Excel.

*Note: A minority of .pai files may be legacy raster images created by older MAGIX software. If your file is an image, the target format should be JPG or PNG.*
