About TPQ files
The .TPQ file extension is a dual-purpose format that most commonly represents a Topographic Quad file from the now-discontinued National Geographic TOPO! software series. These files function as proprietary containers for high-resolution raster map tiles used in outdoor navigation and trip planning. Because the TOPO! software is legacy technology (designed for Windows XP/2000) and no longer supported, users are often locked out of their map data on modern operating systems like Windows 11 or macOS. The internal structure is typically a standard image with a proprietary binary header, making them difficult to view without specific conversion tools. Users usually convert these maps to JPG or PNG for general viewing, or to KMZ/GPX for use in modern tools like Google Earth or Gaia GPS.
In a professional context, .TPQ can also identify a Translation Project Quote file used by translation management systems (TMS) such as RWS Trados or Phrase (formerly Memsource). These files contain pricing, word counts, and project scope details sent to clients or freelancers. They are often XML-based but require the specific TMS software to render correctly. Users without access to a paid TMS license typically need to convert these quotes into PDF for reading or XLSX (Excel) for data analysis.
Convert.Guru analyzes your TPQ file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert TPQ file to TMP, TEMP, CACHE, LOG, BAK, OLD, NEW, PART, DOWNLOAD, CRDOWNLOAD, LOCK or PID, you can use TOPO! or similar software from the "Topographic Map Quad" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert DEVICE, CACHE, SOCK, SYMLINK, PID, MOUNT, FIFO, LOG, PIPE, TMP, JUNCTION or TEMP files to TPQ, try TOPO! or another comparable tool in the "Topographic Map Quad" category.
The TPQ Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our TPQ converter.
