About TPQ files

The .TPQ file extension is primarily associated with two very different uses: Topographic map quad files for legacy mapping software, and Translation project quote files for localization management systems. Map users interact with these files to store specific geographic topographic regions in the National Geographic Maps TOPO! application. Localization managers use them to store cost, matching statistics, and word-count estimates in translation software like SDL Trados and Phrase.

Users need to convert these files because both variants are highly restrictive. The map quad files are obsolete, heavily proprietary, and unsupported by modern web browsers or standard GIS applications. They trap your geographical data inside a discontinued ecosystem. The translation quote files require an expensive software subscription to view, making it incredibly frustrating to share pricing details with clients or external stakeholders who lack the software.

To overcome these limits, users should convert the map variant into standard, modern GIS formats like KML or SHP, or render them as JPG or PDF for easy sharing and printing. Translation quotes are best converted to standard spreadsheet formats like CSV or XLSX to retain tabular pricing data, or PDF for final invoicing. Keep in mind that converting TOPO! files may lose proprietary interactive layers, and converting quotes will strip away direct software integration.

This file format is exceptionally difficult to open or convert because it is closed and proprietary. Standard online converters fail to process .TPQ files because they lack the specific parsing logic. Often, only the original software can properly read or export the data. However, convert.guru provides a realistic workaround. Just drag and drop your file to identify the format, view it, and convert it when possible. Because the translation variant of .TPQ utilizes an underlying SQL database structure, our analysis can often detect the embedded data, allowing you to bypass the proprietary lock and extract the raw text and financial figures.

Convert.Guru analyzes your TPQ file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted HED, GED and SLC files.

The TPQ Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our TPQ converter.
