To convert other file formats to the "GPS Track & Map Data" file type, you need software like National Geographic TOPO! or a similar tool.
About TPO files
A .TPO file generally serves one of two completely different purposes: it is either a legacy Topographic map data file used by National Geographic TOPO! software, or a Receiver option authorization file used to unlock hardware features on Topcon Positioning Systems GNSS receivers.
For mapping users, the .TPO format stores custom waypoints, routes, tracklogs, and map annotations. Unfortunately, this format is heavily disadvantaged by its proprietary nature. National Geographic TOPO! was discontinued over a decade ago. The software struggles to run on modern operating systems, leaving many users locked out of decades of personal hiking or surveying data. To preserve this data, users desperately need to convert .TPO files to open GPS standards like GPX or KML so they can be loaded into modern apps like Google Earth, Garmin BaseCamp, or Gaia GPS. When converting, expect to lose proprietary map symbols and custom graphical annotations, as open formats only retain the core coordinate data.
The second type, the Topcon authorization file, is an encrypted machine-readable license. It is designed to be uploaded directly to a surveying receiver using Topcon Tools to activate paid features like GLONASS tracking or RTK. It is not meant to be read by humans or converted to document formats like PDF.
Standard online converters usually fail with .TPO files because the format is closed, undocumented, and binary. Without the original software engine, it is incredibly difficult to parse the coordinate data correctly. Because this file format is difficult to open or convert, often only the original software can properly read or export the data. Just drag and drop your file into convert.guru to identify the format, view it, and convert it when possible. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format, viewing or conversion may still be possible.
Convert.Guru analyzes your TPO file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

The TPO Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our TPO converter.
