About TPO files

The .tpo extension is primarily associated with National Geographic TOPO!, a discontinued mapping software series popular among hikers and outdoor enthusiasts for planning trips. These files contain proprietary geospatial data, including waypoints, routes, and tracklogs overlaid on USGS topographic maps.

The Problem: Since National Geographic ended support for the TOPO! series in 2013, opening these files is difficult. The format is a closed binary container, meaning you cannot simply open it in a text editor or import it directly into modern tools like Google Earth, Strava, or Garmin BaseCamp. Users often find their historical trek data locked inside this obsolete format.

The Solution: To salvage your data, you must convert the .tpo file to an open standard.

Note: A secondary, unrelated use of .tpo is as a Receiver Option Authorization File for Topcon GNSS receivers. These are encrypted license files used to unlock specific hardware features (like GLONASS tracking) and cannot be converted to other formats.

Convert.Guru analyzes your TPO file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted FMF, NXS and RML files.
