About NXS files
A .NXS file is primarily a NeXus scientific data file used to store complex neutron, X-ray, and muon experiment data utilizing the HDF5 data model. Alternatively, the same extension is heavily used as an HTML-based remote connection settings file for NoMachine, a synthesizer sound preset for the reFX Nexus audio plugin, or a phylogenetic data container in Mesquite.
The fundamental disadvantage of the .NXS format is extreme fragmentation. Because multiple unrelated developers use the exact same extension, your operating system rarely knows how to handle it correctly. Furthermore, formats like the reFX synthesizer preset or Siemens NX 3D model data are closed and proprietary. They lock your data inside specialized ecosystems, forcing you to purchase or install the original software just to view the contents. Scientific .NXS files are dense binary containers that often exceed gigabytes in size and are completely unsupported by web browsers or standard office applications.
Because of this fragmentation, standard online converters fail to process .NXS files. They lack the specialized libraries required to decode multidimensional HDF5 arrays, proprietary VST plugin parameters, or binary game scripts. For true structural changes, only the original software can properly read or export the data. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format - like HDF5 or HTML - viewing or conversion to CSV, JSON, or TXT may still be possible.
Convert.Guru analyzes your NXS file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

The NXS Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our NXS converter.
