About TLE files

A .TLE file (Two-Line Element set) is a legacy text-based data format used by NORAD and US Space Command to track Earth-orbiting satellites. While efficient for the 1970s punch cards it was designed for, the format is a major friction point for modern developers and analysts. The file consists of 70-column lines containing cryptic encoded values - such as mean motion, eccentricity, and inclination - without any headers or labels. Consequently, you cannot simply double-click to view meaningful data; opening it in a standard text editor just reveals strings of numbers that require a specialized parser to interpret. Users typically need to convert .TLE files into structured formats like CSV for analysis in Microsoft Excel, JSON for web applications, or KML for 3D visualization in Google Earth.

Convert.Guru analyzes your TLE file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted SCORE, VTP and GPX files.

The TLE Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our TLE converter.
