About THD files

The .thd file extension is most commonly a Dolby TrueHD Audio file. Developed by Dolby Laboratories, this format stores 100% lossless surround sound audio data, typically extracted directly from Blu-ray discs. It supports up to 16 discrete channels of high-resolution audio. Less frequently, .thd files store Facebook Messenger thread metadata, Ellisys Bluetooth test histories, PicoQuant TCSPC measurement data, or Tescan Scanning Electron Microscope images.

Working with .thd audio files is notoriously difficult. The files are exceptionally large, often exceeding several gigabytes for a single movie track. Because of their proprietary, bandwidth-heavy encoding, they lack native playback support in standard operating systems, web browsers, and mobile devices. Without specialized hardware decoders or analysis software like MediaInfo, the files are completely unplayable. The secondary data and metadata variants of .thd are similarly proprietary and useless outside their specific hardware or app environments.

To make Dolby TrueHD files usable, you must convert them. For archiving audio while retaining lossless quality and multichannel support, convert to FLAC. For broad compatibility in standard video editing suites, convert to WAV. If file size is your primary concern, convert to a highly compressed format like MP3 or AAC (note: this will permanently discard the surround sound channels and lossless fidelity). Drag and drop your file here to analyze and convert it - free, online, and without installing heavy media software.
