About IRS files
The .IRS file extension is heavily fragmented, serving entirely different purposes across mobile audio, tax preparation, scientific research, and gaming. Its primary use is as an Audio Impulse Response file based on the RIFF format. These files store convolution reverb data - essentially an acoustic fingerprint of a room, equalizer, or specific headphone model. They are predominantly used by ViPER4Android, an advanced audio modification framework for rooted Android devices. Other distinct variations include Infrared Spectrum Data files generated by OMNIC software from Thermo Fisher Scientific, proprietary tax return e-files used by TaxAct to communicate with the U.S. Internal Revenue Service, and even level map files for Unreal Engine 4 and the game Iron Storm. The primary disadvantage of the .IRS extension is its extreme ambiguity. A tax file cannot be opened by an audio app, and a spectrum data file is useless without an active OMNIC license. The proprietary nature of these formats means that users are frequently locked out of their own data without the original, often expensive or obsolete, software. ViPER4Android files, while based on the standard RIFF container, are not natively recognized by default media players. Tax files are heavily encoded and unreadable as standard documents. For Audio (.IRS), convert to WAV or FLAC so the impulse response data can be loaded into mainstream DAWs.
