About IRS files
The .IRS extension suffers from a significant identity crisis, utilized by completely unrelated software ecosystems. The most common iteration (approx. 30%) is an Impulse Response audio file, widely used in the ViPER4Android community and audio engineering. These files contain the acoustic "fingerprint" of a space - like a concert hall or a vacuum tube amplifier - captured in a RIFF container. The Problem: While they are often technically identical to standard WAV files, most media players and Digital Audio Workstations (DAWs) like Ableton Live fail to recognize the extension, making them impossible to audition or import without manual renaming or conversion.
Alternatively, an .IRS file may be a settings file for Adobe Photoshop (containing "Save for Web" output preferences), a game map for the Unreal Engine, or even an Internal Revenue Service e-filing data dump. This ambiguity creates a high risk of software errors; trying to load a tax file into an audio processor will fail. The Solution: For audio users, the best workflow is converting .IRS to WAV or FLAC to ensure universal compatibility with reverb plugins. For Adobe or tax data, converting to XML or PDF allows you to view the raw data or archive the information in a human-readable format.
Convert.Guru analyzes your IRS file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

The IRS Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our IRS converter.
