About TCK files

The .TCK extension is a classic example of a file format collision, most commonly referring to the Tracks File used by MRtrix3 for neuroimaging. These files store tractography streamlines - complex 3D representations of white matter nerve fibers in the brain generated from Diffusion Tensor Imaging (DTI). They are specialized binary containers consisting of a text header followed by raw floating-point triplets, making them unreadable to standard text editors or generic 3D viewers.

Users frequently run into friction when trying to share this data with colleagues using different software, such as TrackVis. The native .TCK format often suffers from coordinate system mismatches (e.g., RAS vs. LPS orientation), meaning a file that looks perfect in MRtrix might appear flipped or shifted when opened elsewhere. For broad compatibility, researchers typically need to convert these files to TRK (TrackVis), VTK (for ParaView), or standard OBJ formats.

Less frequently, a .TCK file may be a proprietary Game Track Data file from older Codemasters titles like TOCA Race Driver. These are compiled game assets containing geometry and texture definitions for racing circuits. Unlike the scientific variant, these game files are often encrypted or compressed to prevent modification, rendering them impossible to "convert" without specific, community-made modding tools.

Convert.Guru analyzes your TCK file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted BMC, SOS, PVP and TRK files.

The TCK Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our TCK converter.
