About TCI files
The .TCI file extension primarily acts as a Trigger Compressed Instrument file. These files store highly compressed, multi-velocity drum samples designed exclusively for the Slate Digital Trigger audio plugin. A smaller percentage of .TCI files function as proprietary scanned document images generated by Top Image Systems eFLOW or Canon enterprise scanners, or as electronic circuit board layouts for Typon_CI. Audio engineers use Slate Digital software to load these drum hits to replace or augment live drum recordings. The document variants are used in corporate environments for bulk invoice scanning and data capture. The massive disadvantage of the .TCI format is its strictly proprietary lock-in. A drum sample packed in a .TCI container cannot be played in standard media players, browsers, or other samplers. It forces you to maintain a subscription or license for the specific plugin. Similarly, scanned document .TCI files are effectively useless outside of their specialized document management systems, making archival sharing difficult. For audio files, users inevitably want to convert to standard, universal WAV or AIF files to use the samples in other DAWs. Document variants demand conversion to universal PDF or TIFF formats. The .TCI format is incredibly difficult to open or convert because it is a closed, proprietary format. Standard online converters fail because they do not have access to the specific decoding algorithms. Often, only the original software can properly read or export the embedded data. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format, viewing or conversion may still be possible.

The TCI Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our TCI converter.
