About TBP files

The .tbp file extension primarily represents a Tekla BIMsight Package. These files are used in Building Information Modeling (BIM) to store 3D models, clash detection data, and project notes for construction teams. They are heavily associated with Tekla Structures and the now-retired Tekla BIMsight software. Under the hood, these packages are standard ZIP archives containing IFC models and XML data. A secondary use for .tbp files is as an animation project file for Toon Boom Harmony. Professional animators use these files to save scene setups, timelines, and vector drawings. Less commonly, the extension is used for Tablacus Explorer configuration databases, which are internally structured as SQLite files.

Users often struggle with .tbp files because they are tied to proprietary, expensive, or retired software ecosystems. Tekla BIMsight is officially obsolete, making legacy project files difficult to open without installing modern alternatives like Trimble Connect. Similarly, Toon Boom requires a costly subscription, and its project files cannot be viewed natively in web browsers or standard office software.

For Tekla packages, the best conversion workaround is to rename or convert the file to a standard ZIP archive to extract the underlying IFC 3D models. For Toon Boom projects, you must export the project directly from within the software to a standard video format like MP4 or MOV, because the .tbp file only holds project settings, not the rendered video frames.

Because these are complex project packages rather than simple media files, they are notoriously difficult to convert using basic online tools. Often, only the original software can properly read or export the structured data. Our system can inspect the file and reveal its internal structure. If our analysis detects a supported underlying format - like a standard ZIP container or an embedded SQLite database - viewing the contents or extracting the assets may still be possible.

Convert.Guru analyzes your TBP file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted PDF, SMX, RWT and HPI files.

FAQ

If you want to convert TBP file to DWG, DXF, DGN, RVT, RFA, SKP, 3DM, STEP, IGES, SAT, X_T or X_B, you can use Tekla Structures or similar software from the "BIM Project Package" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….

To convert SLDASM, DGN, PRT, IAM, X_B, CATPRODUCT, SLDPRT, RVT, ASM, DWG, CATPART or DXF files to TBP, try Tekla Structures or another comparable tool in the "BIM Project Package" category.

The TBP Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our TBP converter.
