About TBE files
The .TBE file extension primarily represents spatial audio assets created by Two Big Ears, a company acquired by Meta to power the Facebook 360 Spatial Workstation. These files are 8-channel proprietary containers designed to hold Ambisonic audio and head-locked stereo streams for 360-degree video and VR experiences.
For most users, a .TBE file is a "black box" format. It cannot be opened in standard media players like VLC or Windows Media Player, and since Meta discontinued the Facebook 360 Spatial Workstation suite in 2022, the software required to play or edit them is becoming difficult to find. This creates a significant archiving risk: your spatial audio mixes are locked in a format that modern tools like Reaper or Pro Tools cannot natively import without legacy plugins.
To make these files usable, you typically need to convert them. For archiving and editing, the best target is WAV (specifically B-Format Ambisonics), which preserves the 3D spatial data in a standard format. For casual previewing, converting to a binaural MP3 allows you to hear the 3D effect using standard headphones.
Note: A smaller percentage of .TBE files are data models used by ZoomSystems. These are simply renamed ZIP archives. If your file is not audio-related, try renaming the extension from .tbe to zip and opening it with 7-Zip or macOS Archive Utility.

The TBE Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our TBE converter.
