About AMB files
The .AMB format is primarily used as a proprietary container file for game assets, sound banks, or CAD data. Game developers like Spike Chunsoft (Dragon Ball Z) and Ensemble Studios (Age of Empires II) use this format to bundle 3D models, textures, and audio files into a single, compressed archive. Alternatively, the extension is utilized by the Amoeba CAD system for proprietary design data, and by Bolide Software for All My Books databases.
The main disadvantage of the .AMB format is its highly specialized, closed-source nature. Because these files are compiled for specific game engines or legacy software, they lack native support in modern operating systems like Windows or macOS. Users attempting to view or modify the contents often face a frustrating barrier, requiring complex modding tools, python scripts, or hex editors. Casual users cannot simply double-click to open them.
To make the contents usable, conversion or extraction is necessary. For game sound banks, extract the audio to WAV or MP3 for universal media playback. For CAD files, migrating the geometry to DXF ensures compatibility with modern drafting tools like AutoCAD. If your file is a database, converting it to CSV or XML will allow you to read the text in Microsoft Excel. Just drag and drop your file here to analyze and convert it - free, online, and without installing software.
Convert.Guru analyzes your AMB file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert AMB file to MP3, WAV, AAC, FLAC, OGG, WMA, M4A, AIFF, OPUS, ALAC, APE or WV, you can use Age of Empires or similar software from the "Game Asset & Data Container" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert MIDI, AAC, TTA, AU, WV, DTS, MID, FLAC, RA, MP3, PCM or WAV files to AMB, try Age of Empires or another comparable tool in the "Game Asset & Data Container" category.
The AMB Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our AMB converter.
