About TBD files

A .tbd file typically falls into one of two distinct categories, both of which present unique access challenges. The most common variety is a proprietary game data container used by the Alamo Engine in titles developed by Petroglyph Games (such as Star Wars: Empire at War). These files are technically RIFF (Resource Interchange File Format) containers that bundle game assets like scripts, audio, or text. Because they are compiled binary archives, they cannot be opened with standard editors, and users often struggle to extract the assets for modding or viewing without specialized community tools.

Alternatively, if you are a developer on macOS, a .tbd file is likely a Text-Based Stub Library. Introduced by Apple in Xcode, these files replaced binary dylib files in SDKs to reduce download sizes. While they contain human-readable YAML text describing the library's symbols and architecture, the operating system often treats them as system files, preventing easy access.

The TBD Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our TBD converter.
