About RECORD files

A .record file is a generic container used by distinct ecosystems, most commonly associated with Apple CloudKit frameworks for storing serialized data or the Auto.js automation tool for Android. In the Apple ecosystem, these files typically act as binary property lists (bplist) containing synced application data, user preferences, or database records intended for internal system use. Alternatively, in the Android development sphere, a .record file stores recorded user actions (gestures, touches) in a JSON structure to automate tasks via Auto.js.

A major limitation for users is the format's ambiguity and lack of native desktop support. Since .record files are often generated as background processes or developer logs, they lack a standard association on Windows or macOS. Trying to open one directly often results in an "Unknown File Type" error or a display of garbled binary text. Furthermore, data inside CloudKit records is frequently encoded, meaning a standard text editor cannot render the content meaningfully. For developers or data analysts needing to inspect this data, the best workflow is converting the file to a structured, human-readable format. For CloudKit data, converting to JSON or XML is ideal for debugging and integration. for Auto.js scripts, converting to TXT or JavaScript allows for easy editing. If the file originates from an HT Datalogger (humidity/temperature logs), converting to CSV or XLSX is essential for analysis in Microsoft Excel.

The RECORD Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our RECORD converter.
