About TAX files
The .TAX file extension is a generic label used by various financial software packages to store annual tax return data. The specific internal format depends heavily on the country and software vendor: it acts as the native save format for Intuit TurboTax in the US, DATEV in Germany, and Winman in India. Some variants, like those from the Canada Revenue Agency, are actually structured XML files, while Swiss BE-Tax files are often renamed ZIP archives.
The primary frustration with .TAX files is proprietary lock-in and version dependency. A file created in TurboTax 2020 typically requires that specific year's software to open or edit, rendering the file useless if you have uninstalled the program or let your subscription lapse. Additionally, these files usually contain sensitive Personally Identifiable Information (PII) and are often encrypted or binary-encoded, meaning they cannot simply be opened in a text editor or web browser.
For long-term storage and proof of filing, users should convert these volatile data files to PDF (for human-readable archiving) or TXF (Tax Exchange Format) for moving data between financial programs. While direct conversion often requires the original host software due to encryption, checking if your specific file is a simple XML container or ZIP archive can sometimes allow for partial data recovery without the paid software.
Convert.Guru analyzes your TAX file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert TAX file to PDF, XLS, XLSX, XLSM, XLSB, ODS, CSV, TSV, TAB, DIF, SLK or WK1, you can use Intuit_TurboTax or similar software from the "Tax Return Data Storage" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….

The TAX Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our TAX converter.
