About TAX files
A .TAX file is a data container used to store income tax return information. Because tax regulations differ by country, the exact format of a .TAX file depends entirely on the software that created it. It is commonly associated with Intuit TurboTax in the United States, DATEV eG software in Germany, Winman CA-ERP in India, and regional solutions like BE-Tax in Switzerland. These files store your financial inputs, deductions, personal data, and the final tax calculations.
The main disadvantage of .TAX files is their proprietary and highly restricted nature. They are not standard documents. You cannot open them in a web browser, text editor, or generic document viewer. Furthermore, tax software often requires you to buy a new version or subscription every year. A file created in 2023 usually cannot be opened by the 2024 software version without a specific import tool. This creates severe vendor lock-in and makes long-term document archiving frustrating.
Users typically want to convert a .TAX file to a standard PDF for secure long-term record-keeping or printing. Alternatively, users might want to convert the data to XML or CSV for spreadsheet analysis. However, because these files are heavily structured and sometimes encrypted to protect personally identifiable information (PII), third-party conversion is extremely challenging. Often, only the original software can properly read, render, or export the data into a readable tax form. Our analysis engine will check the file signature. Some .TAX files, like the Swiss BE-Tax variant, are actually standard ZIP archives, while Canadian CRA variants use standard XML. If our system detects these underlying formats, we can extract the internal data or convert it to a more accessible format, saving you from reinstalling old, expensive software.
Convert.Guru analyzes your TAX file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert TAX file to PDF, XLS, XLSX, XLSM, XLSB, ODS, CSV, TSV, TAB, DIF, SLK or WK1, you can use Intuit TurboTax or similar software from the "Tax Return Data Storage" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert WQ1, XLSM, NOTES, QPW, WK3, WB2, WKS, XLSB, 123, XLS, WB1 or XLSX files to TAX, try Intuit TurboTax or another comparable tool in the "Tax Return Data Storage" category.
The TAX Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our TAX converter.
