Convert TARGET to another file type
To convert TARGET Configuration files to another format, you need systemd or other System software.
Convert a file to TARGET
To convert other file formats to the "System Configuration File" file type, you need software like systemd or a similar tool.
About TARGET files
Files with the .TARGET extension are predominantly plain text configuration files used by systemd, the core init system for most Linux distributions. They define 'target units' - synchronization points that group various system services during boot sequences. For instance, the multi-user.target file dictates which network and login services must start for a server to function. Additionally, software developers using the Eclipse IDE use .TARGET files as Target Definition files, which dictate plug-in dependencies and environment variables using an XML structure.
Because these are highly specialized environment files, they are completely unrecognized by standard desktop operating systems like Windows or macOS. Double-clicking a .TARGET file usually results in an annoying error prompting you to choose a program. It is a strictly context-dependent format; the configuration data only truly functions when processed by the systemd daemon or the Eclipse compiler. Sharing these configurations with IT support or on developer forums can be incredibly frustrating if the recipient's email client or system rejects the unfamiliar extension.
Often, only the original software can properly read or execute the functional data, and standard file converters fail because they do not recognize the extension. Since these are inherently text or XML-based files underneath, our analysis engine can detect the embedded format and show the internal content. We allow you to view the code and instantly convert the raw data into universally accessible formats like TXT, MD, or PDF so you can easily attach it to support tickets without compatibility issues.
Convert.Guru analyzes your TARGET file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert TARGET file to TMP, TEMP, CACHE, LOG, BAK, OLD, NEW, PART, DOWNLOAD, CRDOWNLOAD, LOCK or PID, you can use systemd or similar software from the "System State Synchronization" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert DEVICE, CACHE, SOCK, SYMLINK, PID, MOUNT, FIFO, LOG, PIPE, TMP, JUNCTION or TEMP files to TARGET, try systemd or another comparable tool in the "System State Synchronization" category.
The TARGET Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our TARGET converter.
