.TAF files are most commonly associated with Text Adventure Format games and interactive fiction. Platforms like Twine or ADRIFT use these files to store story nodes, player choices, and text data. However, the .TAF extension is highly fragmented across industries. It is also utilized as a game animation data file by Take-Two Interactive, a building automation archive by TRIC software, and even as a sheet metal cutting file by TRUMPF.
The biggest disadvantage of a .TAF file is ambiguity. Because so many different software vendors chose this identical three-letter extension, your operating system has no idea which program to use. Most of these formats are proprietary, completely undocumented, and lack native support in modern operating systems or web browsers. If you try to open a TRUMPF sheet metal file in an interactive fiction reader, it will simply fail.
Converting a .TAF file depends entirely on its actual underlying data. If it is an ADRIFT text adventure, you might want to convert the internal text to TXT or PDF. If it is a TRIC building automation project (which is structurally a ZIP archive), you can rename the extension to ZIP to extract its contents. Standard online converters fail completely here because they assume all .TAF files share the same internal structure.
