A .taco file usually represents a Tableau Analytics Connector package. These files are utilized by Tableau Desktop and Tableau Server to enable native connections to custom databases or APIs via ODBC/JDBC drivers. A secondary use for the .taco extension is the TACO (Tender-System Automotive COmpetence) format, which is a highly proprietary automotive tender specification file used internally by Mercedes-Benz.
The major disadvantage of the .taco format is its rigid, closed ecosystem. In the case of Mercedes-Benz TACO files, the format requires specialized, internal B2B vendor software to parse. For Tableau connectors, the file is actually a standard ZIP archive masked by a custom extension. It contains raw XML manifests, JavaScript files, and UI icons. Because it acts as a software plugin rather than a standard document, standard online converters fail to process it into printable formats. You cannot simply double-click a .taco file to open it in a word processor; it must be manually placed in the Tableau Connectors directory.
