About TDE files
The .TDE extension primarily serves two very different masters: legacy business intelligence and voxel-based gaming.
Most frequently in enterprise environments, a .TDE file is a Tableau Data Extract. Before Tableau introduced the faster .HYPER format, TDE was the standard for compressing and importing data from external sources (like SQL databases or Excel) into Tableau's visualization engine.
The problem? .TDE is a legacy proprietary format. It is essentially a "black box" binary file optimized for an older generation of the Tableau engine. You cannot open it in text editors, and it is not natively compatible with Excel or modern web browsers. If you are sitting on archived TDE files, you are locked into an outdated ecosystem; newer versions of Tableau Desktop automatically upgrade these to .HYPER upon saving, making backward compatibility a nightmare. For archiving or sharing data with non-Tableau users, converting .TDE to CSV (Comma Separated Values) or XLSX is the only pragmatic solution.
Alternatively, if you are a gamer, the .TDE file is likely a data archive for Teardown, the voxel sandbox heist game by Tuxedo Labs. These files package game assets - textures, levels, and voxel models - often in an encrypted or compressed state to prevent casual tampering. Modders frequently hit a wall trying to edit these directly. To modify game assets or inspect the voxel structures, you typically need to extract the contents or convert specific internal textures to standard image formats like PNG.
Convert.Guru analyzes your TDE file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
Users also converted GSM, TWBX, TACO and TDSX files.
The TDE Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our TDE converter.
