The .TDE file extension primarily acts as a Tableau Data Extract file, utilized by Tableau Desktop (see Tableau Software on Wikipedia) to store highly compressed, columnar local data. By saving data locally, Tableau speeds up visualization performance and allows offline analysis. Alternatively, .TDE files serve as game data and encrypted archives for the physics-based destruction game Teardown by Tuxedo Labs, measurement data log files for Yokogawa MV series recorders, or compiled textures in the Torque Game Engine.
The main disadvantage of a Tableau .TDE file is its proprietary nature. It is a closed binary format that requires an expensive software subscription to open. You cannot view the raw data in standard applications like Microsoft Excel or web browsers. Furthermore, Tableau officially deprecated the .TDE format in 2018, replacing it with the newer .HYPER format. This means long-term archiving of .TDE files poses a massive compatibility risk. Teardown .TDE files share a similar problem: they are locked game assets that frustrate modders trying to extract audio or textures without reverse-engineering the archive.
