About SYN files
The .SYN extension is a classic example of a filename collision, shared by over a dozen distinct software ecosystems. The most significant commercial use is for Trafficware Synchro, a suite of software now owned by Cubic used by civil engineers to model and optimize traffic signal timing. These files contain complex intersection data, signal phasing, and flow rates. The biggest obstacle here is the proprietary nature of the format; opening a version 11 file in version 10 often fails, and the software itself is an expensive enterprise license. Engineers frequently need to convert these models into PDF reports or CSV data dumps for stakeholders who lack the specialized viewer.
However, you might also be dealing with a Kentec Syncro fire panel configuration file. These contain critical safety logic for fire alarm systems and are strictly proprietary to Kentec Electronics. Attempting to edit these in a text editor can corrupt the checksums required for safety compliance. Other common variants include TextPad syntax definition files (which are simple plain text and can be converted to TXT easily), Synapse Audio Orion instrument presets (unlikely to convert to standard audio), or SimSynth documents. Because of this ambiguity, specialized inspection is required before conversion. For traffic data, the best target is usually PDF for visual reporting or XML for data interoperability. For text-based variants like TextPad or SimSynth, converting to TXT makes the data accessible.
Use Convert.Guru to open and convert your SYN file.
If you want to convert SYN file to CX, MP3, WAV, AAC, FLAC, OGG, WMA, M4A, AIFF, OPUS, ALAC or APE, you can use Synchro Studio or similar software from the "Traffic Signal Analysis Model" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert MIDI, AAC, TTA, AU, WV, DTS, MID, FLAC, RA, MP3, PCM or WAV files to SYN, try Synchro Studio or another comparable tool in the "Traffic Signal Analysis Model" category.
The SYN Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our SYN converter.
